Northrop's dance season continues its Woman of Substance partnership with the O'Shaughnessy this month with new works by Miami multidisciplinary artist Rosie Herrera. The 30-year-old choreographer has been attracting serious attention in venues along the East Coast for work that compresses the vibrant colors, transgressive sexualities, and culture clashes inherent in her Florida city with her mime, cabaret, and drag-show sensibilities. She's also a coloratura soprano. "Various Stages of Drowning: A Cabaret" plumbs all of the above in a surreal investigation of "drowning," replete with pop- and high-culture references. "Dining Alone" is informed by Herrera's upbringing as a Cuban-American daughter of a cook and restaurant owner, and reflects on her current views on food, dining solo, and the power of attachments.
