Cy Amundson

It’s a homecoming this week for Minnesota native Cy Amundson, who is set to perform a one-off gig in town this Tuesday. “Last year, I got the chance to headline Acme, which is the club I came up in,” says Amundson. “It was a dream come true.” Now headlining across the country, he only gets to his “home club” once a year -- if he’s lucky. “And that’s heartbreaking. Anytime I get a chance to fill in on an off day, it’s the best thing ever. I’m spoiled to have come from there.” A huge country and rockabilly fan, Amundson would have loved a career in the music business. “My dad is incredibly musically talented, and my brother Greg is a country musician and has an outrageous voice,” he says. “But I got nothing. I got my mom’s side, and she shouldn’t sing in church. She is bad. There’s not much there for me.” Still, he respects when performers tackle art forms outside of the one they are generally known for. “I think it's so funny when people shit on actors who become musicians, [even though] they are generally terrible,” Amundson says, citing Kevin Costner as a popular target. “He’s one of my favorite actors. He has his band [Modern West], and they’re not anything great. But being the most talented actor in the world and being decent at music? That's amazing." He notes the reverse isn’t always the case. "Musicians coming into the acting world don’t get dumped on too much do they?" 18+
