By all accounts, Hofesh Shechter's "Political Mother" is epic, in all senses of the word. The Israeli-born choreographer was trained as a pianist, dancer, and percussionist, then did his mandated two years of national service in the Israeli army. When Shechter arrived in Britain in 2002, he could strip and reassemble an Uzi blindfolded — and make explosive dance driven by percussive scores he composed himself. If you're wondering if there's a connection to Ohad Naharin, of the hyper-physical and instantly compelling Gaga movement vocabulary, there is. Shechter was in Naharin's company, Batsheva, for several years. But Shechter also claims Mats Ek, William Forsythe, and Wim Vandekeybus as influences. For the dance fans in the audience, that's really all you need to know. Everyone else? The show's going to be fast, furious, visceral, hair-raising, and loud, and it will completely rock your world. Rumor has it earplugs will be handed out with the programs. (Photo by Gabriele Zucca)
