More About

The hoo-ha about the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world may not speak well to people's bullshit detectors, but it has provided a worthy backdrop for art. New Native and Bedlam theaters are teaming up for their own special take, complete with song and dance, with 2012: The Musical! Navajo playwright Rhiana Yazzie, who is also artistic director for New Native Theatre, wrote the play, which takes place on Franklin Avenue and draws heavily on Native American humor. The piece debuted at Bedlam's 2011 10-Minute Play Festival. Despite initial fears that the material might not connect with non-Native audiences, the show became a hit, and plans were made to expand it into a full-length show. Yazzie worked with two members of New Native's ensemble, Inez DeCoteau and Andrea Fairbanks, and enlisted Marisa Carr to compose the music. What they have created is the company's first original full-length piece. The company is made up of local Native American actors. In preview Wednesday, November 7-8. (Image by Farrington Starnes)
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Nov. 7. Continues through Nov. 18, 2012
