44 Plays for 44 Presidents

Theatre Pro Rata's latest production, 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, is more than a local work. The piece is part of the national Plays for Presidents Festival 2012, in which more than 40 theaters will present the work during the year. As the title says, the piece includes short plays about each of the United States' commanders in chief, presented by a five-actor ensemble. "When we read it, it was immediately clear it was a Pro Rata script. It had lots of history, it's funny, it's serious, and it brings up some really fascinating issues," says director Carin Bratlie. David Beukema, Kelsey Cramer, Grant Henderson, Heather Meyer, and Adam Qualls will bring the various presidents and other characters to life during the show. "Each play is only a few minutes long, so an entire presidency is distilled down and crystallized into a single idea," Bratlie says. "It's pretty cool that way, but it's also really important to make that single idea clear and immediately accessible to the audience. Because if you blink, the play is over." To build on the election theme, the production has been crafted for the Calvary Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall as a way to replicate the typical voting experience. Along with the show, there is also an art exhibit with, naturally, 44 artists offering their own interpretations of America's various presidents. Visit theatreprorata.org for more info.
