More About

Whenever a descriptive qualifier gets attached to a big-name dance company, I get nervous. Is it the B company? The school's students? The primas who would rather stay put than venture to outposts west of the Hudson River? A quick Google search indicates that MOVES is made up of about 20 principals, soloists, and corps de ballet members — excluding musicians. Whew. And the program promises to be exhilarating. The company started by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein in the 1930s is now run by Peter Martins, and the program includes two of his works: "Zakouski," (music by Russian behemoths Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky) and "Hallelujah Junction" (music by John Adams). There's also Balanchine's "Duo Concertant," which Mr. B finally choreographed to his pal Stravinsky's score for New York City Ballet's historic 1972 Stravinsky Festival. And the program has two contemporary works: "Polyphonia" by wunderkind Christopher Wheeldon (often hailed as Mr. B's choreographic successor) and balletdeconstructionist William Forsythe's "Herman Schmerman Pas de Deux."
