Alarmél Valli: An Evening of Bharatanatyam

For years, Twin Cities dance enthusiasts and devotees of Ragamala Dance Theater have been gifted with the evolving (and adventurous) sensibilities and exquisite performances of artistic directors/dancers Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy and their troupe. You may think you've witnessed the best of Bharatanatyam. And in so many ways, you have. But when the Ramaswamys' guru, Alarmel Valli, takes the stage this weekend, prepare to experience the south Indian dance form as you never have before — or may ever again. Friday night is the U.S. premiere of the award-winning film Lasya Kavya: The World of Alarmel Valli, which explores Valli's artistic genius. On Saturday evening, Valli takes the stage in "Kavya Tarangini: An Evening of Bharatanatyam by Alarmel Valli" with live orchestra. Internationally recognized as the expressive dance form's foremost practitioner, Valli is a classicist at heart but infuses the centuries-old style with singular self-expression.
