More About

Raw, visceral, and physical, this mini-fest presents a new generation of performing artists rocking their own countries, and the world, with fierce declarations of African and female identity. Program 1 (Wednesday, Friday) showcases Kettly Noel (Haiti/Mali) and Nelisiwe Xaba (South Africa) in "Correspondances," which is flecked with American pop-culture references and gestural humor. It's paired with "Quartiers Libres" by Nadia Beugré, whom the Chicago Tribune describes as "a fiery, zealous, compelling soloist from Cote d'Ivoire, who practically intimidates the audience into submission, a confrontational stance rarely employed this forcefully — or effectively — in dance." Program II (Thursday, Saturday) focuses on new music, with "Sombra" by Maria Helena Pinto (Mozambique), who performs with buckets (sometimes over her head), and "Madame Plaza" by the three Aïta vocalists, Bouchra Ouizguen (Morocco).
