More About

Former South African photojournalist Guy Tillim long ago abandoned the action shot, preferring to show the aftermath of post-colonialism in Africa. This Friday, he'll Skype in to the Science Teaching and Student Services Building at the U of M to talk about how he sees and shoots architecture, landscape, and people as they exist in the former colonies of Angola, Congo, Madagascar, and Mozambique. An hour later, across the plaza, a traveling show of Tillim's recent work opens at the Weisman Art Museum. Writing in The Guardian, Jonathan Jones says that "Tillim photographs Africa in a way that communicates ambivalent and disturbing ideas and perceptions; every one of his pictures is at the same time a record of something seen and something he seems to have thought about for a long time." The artist will give a talk via a live broadcast from South Africa at a free event at 6:30 p.m. Friday, October 12. The after party following includes music by the African Jazz Trio and hors d'oeuvres and costs $15-$20. (The exhibition is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago)
