Intrepid seekers of Halloween frights will have no trouble finding ghoulish delights throughout the Twin Cities. Every October, horror-themed attractions are resurrected around the metro, each featuring their own macabre blend of seasonal scares. Of all our local purveyors of paranormal fun, however, the Haunted Basement remains the grotesque standard for evoking the sublime surrealism of a waking nightmare. The popular annual attraction, redesigned each year by the twisted minds behind the experimental artist collective the Soap Factory, aspires to provoke deep-seated fears through a labyrinthine tour of the darkest corners of the human psyche. Emphasizing intensifying tension over "jump scares," the event strives to create a fully immersive environment reflective of utter madness. Noah Bremer, local theater director, has overseen the progression of each scenario along the route, imbuing an aura of mounting dread along the way. Crafted by a team of local artists (including special effects makeup designer Brett Dorrian), the frightful environs are leant an even more distressing realism through the ominous odors conjured by "smell engineers" from the St. Croix Sensory. But take heart, attendees with delicate constitutions: "Fraidy Cat Tours" will be held on October 21 and 28. Keep in mind, though, that tickets tend to sell out early.
