More About

It seems like more than a mere coincidence that Ten Thousand Things, long heralded for its mission to introduce theater to unfamiliar audiences, would revisit Shakespeare's Measure for Measure during an election year, especially one steeped in pious posturing. Most conspicuous are those politicians eager to assume the role of moral authority, supporting legislation designed to define marriage by sexual orientation and limit a woman's autonomy over her own body. It's easy to imagine that Angelo, Measure for Measure's central antagonist, would approve of such efforts. Like many would-be leaders, Angelo aims to govern in adherence to a moral code from which he is personally exempt. Considered one of Shakespeare's most cynical comedies, Measure for Measure revolves around two lovers torn apart by the righteous decrees of Angelo, a hypocritical judge who never lets his conscience stand in the way of his own lascivious pursuits. Though such a theme could easily come across as leaden with topical gravity, this Ten Thousand Things production promises an energetic buoyancy through the assured guidance of artistic director Michelle Hensley, who has previously displayed a mastery of the material during a critically lauded 2010 co-production with NYC's the Public Theater. Remounting the production with a stellar cast of local talents, Hensley will once again bring her incisive touch to a classic work that feels absolutely vital to our contemporary world. The Thursday, October 18 performance will be at Plymouth Congregational Church (1900 Nicollet Ave., Minneapolis). (Photo by Paula Keller)
