Through a Glass, Darkly/Don't Make Me Care

Suzy Greenberg's sudden death this summer left the arts community stunned and grieving. When "Through a Glass, Darkly: New Work by Serena Cole," which Greenberg curated, opens this weekend, the SooVAC founder will be mourned and celebrated anew. Greenberg cultivated Cole after discovering the artist during the gallery's "Untitled" exhibition in 2006 — one of Greenberg's many initiatives in support of emerging artists. Greenberg collaborated with Cole on this solo show, which includes psychological portraits inspired by images of fashion models, art historical traditions, and an interest in the body and its mutating form. Also opening this weekend is "Don't Make Me Care," featuring psychologically challenging work by Brian David Downs and Jason and Jesse Pearson (collaborating identical twins who call themselves Dick and Wayne). Cole has said her drawings challenge viewers to look closely at form, within ourselves, and to who is looking at whom. Here's looking at you, Suzy. There will be an opening reception for both shows from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, September 15.
