For "It's Chiming in Normaltown," Midway Contemporary Art will be exhibiting pieces by Glasgow-based artist Sue Tompkins, whose work was last seen at the gallery in a 2007 group show. According to Megan McCready, associate director at Midway, Tompkins will have many works on paper on display, including drawings created using a typewriter. "The majority of her work is very text-based and poetic," she says. For example, a piece might have a line or two of typed text, but when a group of artworks is seen from afar, they have different visual qualities. Tompkins is also showing some new pieces that utilize silk and zippers. The opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 7, will feature a performance from Tompkins at 7 p.m. As the former lead singer of Life Without Buildings, the artist has performance style that includes a big spoken-word element.
