Lara Avery

Anything But Ordinary (Hyperion Books), written by Macalester College grad Laura Avery, is a quick, young-adult read that is rumored to be in development for the big screen. At the Nashville Olympic diving trials, gifted and ambitious 17-year-old Bryce hits her head, sustaining an injury that puts her in a coma. We meet our heroine upon her awakening to a world that has moved on while she laid inert in a hospital bed for five years. Her younger sister has become a rebellious, dark-eyeliner-wearing high school teenager, and her parents' marriage is in tatters and filled with fraught silence. While her best friend and boyfriend have recently graduated from college and are looking forward to the next phase of their lives, Bryce must learn how to walk again, repair her divided family, and make up for her lost five years while attempting to make sense of the visions that accompany her searing headaches at unexpected moments.
