In a city renowned for its abundance of compelling theater, what's a new company gotta do to make an impression? For starters, they can select emerging playwright Rajiv Joseph's wickedly engrossing Gruesome Playground Injuries as their inaugural production. Infusing amour with gore, the mirthfully morbid love story follows the 30-year relationship of Kayleen and Doug, kindred souls united by a penchant for pain. Relaying a history of lacerations, contusions, and disfigurements via a series of vignettes, the perpetually maimed couple represents the literal embodiment of bleeding hearts. Rather than relying on quirk, however, the story evinces an unforeseen degree of empathy, as demonstrated by last year's memorable staging by the Peanut Butter Factory. Audiences that missed the earlier production (or those looking for an encore) should begin queuing up now, as the newly formed Loudmouth Collective has reunited the principal cast and crew (including leads Leigha Horton and Adam Whisner under the direction of Natalie Novacek) for a remount. Launching in such an attention-grabbing fashion underscores Loudmouth Collective's mission to develop a vibrant theater-going community with creatively daring works staged by some of the finest talents on the Twin Cities theater scene. Insisting that theater should be more than a passive diversion, the troupe makes its proposition with an unflinching ode to the affectionate affliction known as love. (Photo by Justin D.
