Minneapolis is undoubtedly a book-smart city, but this Thursday the Loft Literary Center is raising the bar by hosting its first-ever tournament of "literary destiny." Here, 12 contestants will be crafting faux definitions for unusual words. The impressive lineup of local lit heavyweights — such as Peter Bognanni (author of The House of Tomorrow), spoken-word poet Sierra DeMulder, humorous fiction and nonfiction writer Maggie Ryan Sandford, writer and Springboard for the Arts staffer Andy Sturdevant, and John Munson (bass player for Semisonic) — will have their masterful imaginations scrutinized by a panel of judges composed of Marianne Combs, Lorna Landvik, and Anatoly Liberman. To make sure you get your quota of awkward laughs, Jeff Kamin of Books and Bars will emcee. With this crew of wordsmiths, the gibberish, booze, and literary hilarity will surely be flowing. Audience members will have an important role as well: voting. People are encouraged to hoot and holler at their favorite contestants as they move through the bracket ranks. The crowd's chosen Ultimate Master of Words will reign all-powerful over our fair literary city. Oh, and did we mention the open bar? The event's pending success is a no-brainer. All proceeds benefit the Loft Literary Center.
