Dependent upon familiar favorites to attract a reliable audience, theater companies often struggle to find a place for original works from even the most gifted of emerging playwrights. Such repetitively produced material, sadly, has given rise to the mistaken notion that theater has become a stagnant art form. Dedicated to combating this negative impression, Dark & Stormy Productions is a new company focused on fostering the next generation of theatergoers. Founded by artistic director Sara Marsh, the troupe is off to a promising start with Outside Providence: Three One-Act Plays by Edward Allan Baker. Baker, a New York City playwright whose deadpan style has yet to capture a national audience despite a sizable degree of critical attention, assures an inaugural program loaded with incisive wit and keen social perspective. In addition to Marsh, the three plays (Rosemary with Ginger, Face Divided, and Dolores) will spotlight local talents Alayne Hopkins, Catherine Johnson Justice, and Ryan Lindberg, each performing under the adept direction of Matt Sciple. Uniquely staged in an office space in downtown Minneapolis (Engine for Social Innovation), the show will further splinter typical theater conventions with the inclusion of live bands on featured nights, such as the Sudden Lovelys (August 17), Skunk Hollow (August 18), and Lingua Luna (September 15). Whether or not Dark & Stormy actually succeeds in bringing in a younger audience, it's certain to make a dynamic first impression. Visit www.darkstormy.org for more info.
