Somewhere in the mythical book of cinematic comedy, there's surely a section devoted to the mathematical proposition that the number of onscreen characters is directly proportional to the probability of a pie fight. Throughout the history of the genre, of course, comedy teams have exchanged more than creamy desserts for laughs. Exemplifying a wild assortment of volleying humor, the Heights Theater and Take-Up Productions are presenting Two's Funny, Three's a Riot: Great Comedy Teams. Throughout the month-long retrospective, audiences can view the slapstick genius of Laurel and Hardy in the cowboy misadventure Way Out West (1937), the irreverent comic chaos of the Marx Brothers skewering high society in A Night at the Opera (1935), and Abbott and Costello spoofing the supernatural in Hold That Ghost (1941). The screenings aren't devoted to laughs alone, however, as a couple of romantic comedies are poised to tug on heartstrings even as they tickle funny bones. Adam's Rib (1949) features Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn trading quick-witted zingers as romantically entangled lawyers waging a battle of the sexes in the courtroom, while Pillow Talk (1959) introduces the campy threesome of Rock Hudson, Doris Day, and Tony Curtis (the first two as bickering neighbors/would-be lovers, the latter as genially unwitting referee). In the midst of such unpredictable hilarity only one thing is certain: Someone is bound to get a proverbial pie in the face. (Pictured: Pillow Talk)
