Summer Music & Movies: In Dreams

This Monday marks the return of the ever-popular Summer Music & Movies in Loring Park. This year, event organizers drew inspiration from the Walker Art Center's "Midnight Party," an ongoing exhibition featuring pieces birthed into existence from the dark fantasies, odd daydreams, and nightmare hallucinations of notable artists from the past 150 years. The film series kicks off Monday, July 30, with live music from Night Moves before a screening of Alfred Hitcock's Spellbound, a psychological thriller starring Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck set inside an insane asylum. Things lighten up August 6 with Artists and Models, a playful musical comedy with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Afropop artist Oliver Mtukudzi and the Black Spirits will play beforehand. Francophiles will definitely want to attend the August 13 screening of The City of Lost Children, a fantasy drama were an evil scientist abducts children in order to steal their dreams (Rogue Valley opens as the musical set). Finally, the series concludes August 20 with a special event at the Walker's Open Field. Here, folks will be invited to watch The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, a German Expressionist horror film starring a somnambulist, a sinister doctor, and an ominous prophecy. Local band Brute Heart will play an original score set to the silent classic. For more info visit www.walkerart.org.
Mondays, 7 p.m. Starts: July 30. Continues through Aug. 20, 2012
