With the Minnesota Fringe Festival preparing to take over Twin Cities stages in early August, local theater lovers are hungry for their annual gorging of eclectic new works. Those on the lookout for a suitable appetizer would be well advised to check out Savage Umbrella's multidisciplinary Night of New Works. Over the last two weekends of July, the reliably innovative organization is putting forth three original productions crafted by company members. A Gamer's Guide to the 5 Stages of Grief, by playwright Russell Dugger, blurs the distinction between organic and artificial realities, examining the increasing inclination to use the latter to escape from the former. Composer Candace Bilyk similarly looks beyond everyday existence, drawing operatic inspiration from The Golden Carp, a fantastical tale of a fairy's legendary love for the titular mystical creature. Rounding out the selections, playwright/director Christina Lein contemplates the uneasy influence of politics on policy in the arena of public education, using interpretive dance to express an ongoing tension in the topically charged Stop! While the three featured works differ drastically in style and theme, they are united as representations of the wildly diverse talents emerging in our own backyard. Brought together for this singular Night of New Works, the three productions offer a copious feast that should leave even the most famished theatergoer feeling thoroughly satiated.
