More About

There is a world's worth of flavors housed inside the Midtown Global Market, a collection of stalls and restaurants on the first floor of the old Sears building. As part of the Minneapolis Aquatennial, a citywide summer celebration, several vendors will participate in the Global Smoothie Smackdown. Drinks will be made from a blend of flavors representing the diverse cultures that have landed in our town. For $5, tasters can sip smoothies from Salsa a la Salsa, Andy's Garage, Café Finspang, Grass Roots Gourmet, Holy Land Deli, Manny's Tortas, Pham's Deli, the Produce Exchange, and Safari Express. Here's hoping we'll find smoothies utilizing Mexican chiles, dill and cucumbers, some creamy local cheese, hummus, cilantro, and bushels of fresh produce. (Sadly, no tequila or Aquavit — darn liquor licenses.) Each restaurant and shop inside Midtown Global Market always has its own distinct and tasty flavors, so participants will be bringing their A-game for sure. Guests are encouraged to come outfitted for fun with the redundantly named "most unique" Hawaiian shirt contest, where prizes will be awarded. Local one-man band Stoney Savanna will provide some Caribbean tunes as entertainment. The price of admission will benefit the Aquatennial's Ambassador Foundation. (Photo by Nikki L.)
