"If your family doesn't think you're funny, you need proof," says Chris Maddock when asked what's changed since the release of his debut comedy album, Point of Entry (Stand Up! Records). If anyone had doubts about Maddock's chops, the release should do more than erase them. Recorded last summer at a sold-out 7th St. Entry, the album is raucous and brilliant. Maddock was a whirling dervish of humor that night, and the energy generated by a genuinely loving audience was palpable. Subject matter ranged from the profane to the divine, returning often to the comedian's unabashed affection for drugs and music. Stand Up! Records is known for discovering great new talent, with names like Bamford, Oswalt, and Stanhope in its archives. It's easy to imagine Maddock joining those ranks someday as well. In the meantime, the label is re-mounting its successful comedy-and-rock showcase to celebrate the recent release. Combining the two mediums can be a tricky balancing act to manage, but the $4.99 Show has the recipe perfected: Start with a few of the strongest standup acts on the scene (Gabe Noah and Brandon Reynoso), add a dash of metal (Minneapolis metal band Doomstruck! and La Crosse shoegazers Porcupine), and turn Maddock loose inside the cozy confines of the Triple Rock. 18+.
