Last year, roughly 2,500 people gathered at Afton Alps for the biggest produce battle our state had ever seen. This year, the fight is headed downtown. This Saturday, the second-annual Midwest Tomato Fest takes place in downtown Minneapolis, and promises to be bigger and messier than ever. Event organizers are expecting 5,000 to 6,000 fruit-wielding fighters to attend the festivities, which kick off at noon. The food and music choices throughout the afternoon will have a decidedly more Minnesotan feel than last year, with local favorites including Absolute Gruv, the Blend, and the Tim Sigler Band taking the stage, and food trucks from Barrio, World Street Kitchen, and Nate Dogs to fuel you before the rumble. The event will, of course, culminate in the tomato fight itself, which is composed of only spoiled and inedible tomatoes. Kamal Mohamed, one of the founders of the event, says that they are planning to have more than 50,000 tomatoes on hand — three times as many as last year. "People last year said they were happy with how many tomatoes we had, but we [Mohamed and his team] didn't agree. So this year we decided to go even bigger."
