King Tuff is the brainchild of enigmatic guitar virtuoso Kyle Thomas, who has generated a consistent buzz with other musical projects Feathers, Happy Birthday, and Witch (with Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis). King Tuff's brilliant, self-titled sophomore record was recently released on Sub Pop, and certainly delivers on the promise of his previous ventures. His new material is rooted in the lo-fi appeal of garage rock as well as the melodic beauty and easy effervescence featured in '60s surf pop. It's a potent, relentlessly catchy combination that should go over well in a live setting, as King Tuff's performances are rumored to be an absolute riot. Fellow Sub Pop signees Jaill are touring with King Tuff, and the inventive Milwaukee psych-rockers should set the stage well for the headliners. With Voytek. 18+.
