While the political world has always been fraught with contradictory — if not outright hypocritical — notions of moral rectitude, the cultural skirmishes of the past year have made these divided ideologies bracingly apparent. Between the bitter clashes over health insurance coverage for birth control and the endless efforts to restrict access to abortions, it would seem that reproductive rights are a full-time fixation. But proselytizing politicians have also found time to warn of the dangers of same-sex marriages, a prospect apparently alarming enough to warrant a proposed amendment to Minnesota's constitution that would legally define marriage as a bond strictly between a man and woman. Voters on the fence would do well to take in a viewing of The VOW Factor, a refreshingly satiric reminder that all human beings, regardless of sexual orientation, possess the same drive to love one another, lust after others, make terrible decisions, pay horrible consequences, and be left wallowing in the desolation of divorce. Or, just maybe, live happily ever after. With incisive wit honed in the Brave New Workshop, co-writers Joshua Will and Jim Robinson will explore the pleasure and pitfalls of matrimonial pursuits. Featuring original music from Dennis Curley and a cast of comedic ringers, the piece promises to be a spirited ceremony suitable for couples of absolutely any definition. (Photo by Theresa Otte)
