More About

"There's a right way, there's a wrong way, and there's the punk way." Those are the words of Speedboat Gallery founder and punk-rock poet Paul Dickinson, who ran the storefront art center and DIY music venue from 1988 until 1994, when the St. Paul Police and Fire Department shut it down, forever solidifying its punk-rock cred. The thriving underground hot spot not only hosted the work of art-world giants like Frank Gaard (whose recent exhibit at the Walker Art Center recalled his Speedboat Gallery years), but became a platform after hours for such bands as Green Day and Walt Mink. This Saturday, Speedboat returns for a reunion of sorts. The event will feature past SBG artists Bruce Tapola, Alexa Horochowski, Scott Dolan, Sean Smuda, and Gaard, as well as work by the late Daniel Kaniess. Music will be provided by Dickinson's post-punk band Frances Gumm and others. And because Speedboat strove to feature not only the most successful artists, but artists with the most potential, the party will showcase a few up-and-coming talents ready to cause some trouble in the art scene, including Laura Bennet, Katelyn Farstad, and Sophie Wiel. There will also be photos, flyers, and other artifacts from SPG's illustrious past on display.
Sat., June 30, 6-10 p.m., 2012
