More About

This Friday, the Mpls Photo Center ushers in the summer solstice with three new shows in its galleries. "Cig Harvey: You Look at Me Like an Emergency" is the eponymous photographer's visual autobiography of the last decade. Place, performance, and people take center stage in her vibrant images, acting as 74 markers or milestones in a life equal parts quotidian and mysterious. In "The Portrait: Up Close and Personal," Andrea Mellard, curator of exhibitions and public programs at AMOA-Arthouse in Austin, Texas, juried the international competition. She selected images that transcend "debates for digital versus film" by demonstrating "newer technical innovations, like the iPhone and Photoshop, alongside early traditions, such as tintype and ambrotype photography." Finally, "Transitions: The Space Between," is a student show examining the liminal. A project of the University of Minnesota Department of Art and the Beijing Film Academy's School of Photography, the pictures range from a surreal image of a woman's hair decorated with flowers and crustaceans to evocative black-and-white alleyscapes. There will be an opening reception for all three shows from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 22.
