Erected by railroad magnate James J. Hill in 1883, the Stone Arch Bridge stands as one of the Twin Cities' most revered landmarks. Testifying to the artistry of its design, the structure is also the ideal backdrop for the Stone Arch Bridge Festival. Formerly known as the Stone Arch Festival of the Arts, the event had its future cast into doubt by the passing of original founder Ira Heilicher. Thankfully, local impresario Matt Mithun recognized the enduring potential of an event that has drawn sizable crowds to the historic neighborhood every Father's Day weekend for the past 17 years. Distinguishing itself from other regional art crawls, the festival concentrates an enormous range of activities within a refreshingly compact area. Over 250 artists will present and sell their works, offering up a panorama of disciplines and styles. Along the way, visitors can indulge in a vast array of carnival games, family-friendly happenings, and food vendors. Music fans can choose from the 40 performers playing on three stages throughout the weekend. And for those whose definition of art involves chrome and tail fins, the festival features a showcase of classic, imported, and just plain bizarre automobiles. All in all, the event endeavors to gratify every artistic leaning, even for those who prefer to take it all in during a stroll over the Stone Arch Bridge.
