St. Paul Summer Beer Fest

These days, it seems like you can't lob a handful of hops without hitting four new microbreweries. This makes it difficult for even the most diligent of beer drinkers to stay abreast of all the new brews. Fortunately, there's no better event to explore the world of beer than the annual St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. This year's event, held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, includes national names like Goose Island and Brooklyn Brewery, locals like Fulton, and more outlandish offerings like the always fun to order Horny Goat. A twisted sense of humor isn't required for attendance, but it doesn't hurt if you're interested in entering the bags tournament. Thirty-two teams of two players each are expected to toss their bean bags about in hopes of winning beer cozies, bottle openers, and tickets to the 2013 Beer Fest. The most strident rule of the competition is that the tosser must clutch a festival glass in one hand or face a foul (as well as shame, possible ridicule, and thirst). In addition to receiving a commemorative cup ready to refill with samples, attendees can participate in a silent auction benefitting the Midway YMCA. Festival-goers are encouraged to carpool or use mass transit, and arrive well-hydrated (free water will be available at the event as well). For more info, visit www.stpaulsummerbeerfest.com.
