This Saturday, head on over to North Mississippi Regional Park for food, entertainment, and culture at the annual Twin Cities Juneteenth Celebration. The festival honors the 1865 proclamation abolishing slavery in Texas. Early in the morning there will be a free continental breakfast, and vendors will be selling snacks to nosh on throughout the day. You'll also be able to listen to tales told by local luminaries including performer T. Mychael Rambo, professor Mahmoud El-Kati, jazz vocalist Thomasina Petrus, and storyteller Vusumizi Zulu. Or take advantage of the weather and the great outdoors by paddling down the mighty Mississippi in canoes with festival sponsor Wilderness Inquiry. Young tennis players can show off their chops with the USTA Northern and MLK Tennis Buffs for fun prizes. Be sure to catch the amazing musical acts performing, too. Vocal group Power will combine old- and new-school vibes to create a sound as sweet as Motown, Ginger Patterson will show off her jazzy pop and blues vocals, and the Maxx Band promises to deliver solid R&B and funk hits. Don't forget to check out the African American Virtual Museum, an extension of the Twin Cities Juneteenth Celebration that helps to provide jobs and educational programs to the community year-round in north Minneapolis.
