According to Alonzo's research, things were even worse in the East. "The following year, in North Carolina," she wrote, "farm officials set up a statewide hotline to fill crop and livestock jobs. Two calls were received."
Things have only gotten worse with anti-immigrant legislation.
In 2007 more than 90,000 migrants fled Oklahoma, causing a loss of $1.9 billion to the state's economy. Since passage of SB 1070, Arizona has shed 200,000 migrants, who fled to friendlier states.
Agriculture is the largest sector in Georgia's economy, yet lawmakers passed stiff anti-immigrant legislation projected to cost the state $391 million in lost crops. The governor suggested that farmers hire ex-cons to work the fields. The ex-cons refused. More than 70 percent of Georgia's restaurants had labor shortages and lost, on average, $21,000 per eating establishment.
Last year Alabama one-upped Arizona and passed a tougher, meaner anti-immigrant measure.
Research at the University of Alabama said the state could lose up to $10.8 billion and 140,000 jobs.
The governor demanded that the statehouse reconsider. Alabama legislators responded by making the law tougher.
Why, in the middle of a recession, would statehouses vote to cripple their economies by driving Mexicans to flee?
Why, with President Obama deporting more Latinos than at any time in the nation's history, would legislators demand local cops inspect citizenship papers?
The inescapable answer: Race!
The guiding proponent of these statutes is Kris W. Kobach, who helped author SB 1070.
At the time, Kobach was senior counsel to the legal arm of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).
In 1986, John Tanton, FAIR's founder, wrote: "As whites see their power and control over their lives declining, will they simply go quietly into the night? Or will there be an explosion?"
Not surprisingly, the Southern Poverty Law Center called FAIR a racially driven organization.
Alabama's copycat legislation was penned by state Sen. Scott Beason, who has called blacks "aborigines" and declared that when it came to immigration, folks ought to "empty the clip."
In Arizona the bill drafted by Kobach was sponsored by then-state Sen. Russell Pearce.
In 2006 Pearce forwarded to his followers a screed he'd read entitled, "Who Rules America." The essay took exception to race mixing and a "world in which every voice proclaims the equality of races, the inerrant nature of the Jewish 'Holocaust' tale, the wickedness of attempting to halt the flood of non-White aliens pouring across our borders...."
The essay, which originated from a neo-Nazi newsletter, went on to ask: "And who are these all-powerful masters of the media?"
The answer was obvious: "As we shall see, to a very large extent they are Jews."
Eerily, the message Pearce forwarded to political supporters in 2006 foreshadowed coming bloodshed.
"On the other hand, a White racist — that is, any racially conscious White person who looks askance at miscegenation or at the rapidly darkening racial situation in America — is portrayed, at best, as a despicable bigot who is reviled by the other characters, or, at worst, as a dangerous psychopath who is fascinated by firearms and is a menace to all law abiding citizens...," read Pearce's send-along.
Last month Pearce acolyte J.T. Ready slaughtered his girlfriend, her daughter and boyfriend, and a six-month-old infant before turning the gun on himself.
Ready was a neo-Nazi who was photographed at white supremacist rallies in full National Socialist regalia. Following the passage of SB 1070, Ready formed an armed militia that hunted Mexicans in southern Arizona.
After the multiple homicides, Pearce tried to distance himself from Ready. This sleight of hand was complicated for Pearce: He'd endorsed Ready's failed run for the Mesa City Council, and, in fact, had ordained Ready into the priesthood of the Mormon faith and attended his baptism.
These, then, are the miscreants who have stirred this nation's darkest prejudices.
None of this was grist in the Supreme Court. The Obama administration opted to argue only the narrowest of issues: State immigration laws trampled federal domain. With an election looming, the president chose not to confront nativist anxiety.
Latino groups and civil rights organizations have filed lawsuits that challenge what Obama ducked. These suits recount what happens on American streets when brown people are detained, when Mexicans and Central Americans are crowded into detention centers, when families are ripped apart.
When law enforcement cordons off brown communities, the law, as applied, is apartheid.
Perhaps you can understand, after a wave of hateful legislation and a galling discussion by justices and attorneys in the country's highest court, that there are those not content with jurisprudence.
You see, all this legal eloquence comes after generations of families picked crops on their way to citizenship, only to encounter lawyers and lawmakers who are worse than any field boss.
Monica Alonzo's father crossed the border from Mexico. His family worked in the cotton fields. They earned less, picked more, and kept their mouths shut. Kids in school were slapped if they were overheard speaking Spanish.
"They mistreated the Mexicans the worst in El Mirage," says Alonzo. "Mexicans went straight to jail or were roughed up for minor offenses."
"They were made to feel like worthless people," recalls Alonzo. "Many Mexicans instilled in their children the importance of speaking only English. Not in my house. For my father, the treatment created a lot of resentment towards whites. We weren't allowed to speak English at home for some time. We would get in trouble if he knew we were mixing with the Anglos."
Of course I do not know what it takes to become a citizen. I am a naturally born citizen of five generations. My great great grandparents came to America via Ellis Island and entered the country LEGALLY. They came looking for work as well. I highly doubt there is any validity to your claims of it takes 40 years to become a citizen. Last year alone 694,000 people became citizens of which 94,000 were from Mexico. In the last 3 year over 260,000 came from Mexico as LEGAL citizens. Of the 694,000 in 2011 over 50% of them were younger than 40 years old but greater than 18. In fact, the average age is 39 years old of all immigrants. Seems it takes less than 40 years. In total since 2008 over 700,000 people have become citizens of the United States of America. I highly doubt ANY of them have been trying for 40 years to be naturalized. Besides the blatant violation of the immigration laws, illegals do not pay taxes on the money they earn. Then this money is transported from the USA to Mexico further hurting the local economy. All that seems to come back is guns, drugs, and more illegals. I am so overwhelmed by the POOR ME attitude that people have. My post has nothing to do with race. I am driven by the higher costs to me because of the illegal actions. My taxes have to pay for the enforcement of such laws as well as the money spent to pay for things like education and medical expenses for illegals.
I Voted for Obama. That's not going to happen again, He will not get the LATINO vote (that's for sure) He promised Green cards and all we got deport cards. I hope they pass SB1070 through out all 50 states and see who will be picking americas crops? US will be importing potatoes from Peru. If you approve of 1070, wait till you have to pay three dollars for an avocado. We are up next in the lottery, Just like black people, once slaves now millionaires,,,
Clearly you have no clue what it takes to get papers in this country - the waiting list is nearly 40 years for some immigrants who have done it the right way. It's nearly impossible to get papers the "right" way. I am an citizen married to someone "undocumented" and we have a child together. Even he CANNOT get papers and he has done nothing wrong except cross the border. Most latinos are only here to try and make some extra money to send back this money to their loved ones back home. Its the most innocent crime. When you come from a poor country all you try to do is survive and provide for your loved ones. I am so overwhelmed by uneducated comments such as these because they are so racist. Maybe you should cross the Mexican border and never come back. See how you survive...
This article is a bunch of bull. "Undocumented" illegals should be considered criminals. Get your papers in order and enter the correct way or face penalties. If people were to cross from the United States to Mexico we would be arrested for illegal boarder crossing.
Enough with the term "undocumented". These people have entered the country illegally, hence they are illegal aliens.
"In the first six months of 2011, 46,000 mothers and fathers were shipped back to Mexico and left their children in America. And more than 20,000 other parents were ordered out but have yet to depart. Roughly 22 percent of all deportees were forced to abandon children — children who are American citizens."
Be still, my bleeding heart! Who exactly is to blame for leaving minor children behind when parents are deported? We let you take your minor children with you. They can choose to return when they grow up or elect to stay with their parents. All we ask is respect of our nation and laws.
SB 1070 won't "criminalize Mexicans", but it should impact those groups, nationalities or races, by the percentage of of their contribution to the violation of US immigration system. You might consider SB 1070 to be discriminating, but discrimination against illegal aliens is allowed in employment and immigration enforcement. Don't like it? Fix the Third World. Export teachers to teach abroad, don't import illiterate students that bog down the US tax payers. Deport illegal aliens with their US education so they can carry Liberty and honesty to clean up corruption in Third World nations. The USA is a developed nation, now fix the rest of the World.
The usual open border entities are defying--THE AMERICAN PEOPLE--and are implicit in this weakening of our laws are Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder running the Department of Justice. Now we have Washington, D.C. Mayor-Vincent Gray denying the principles that govern us, signing a executive order similar to the directive in Los Angeles, that prohibits police officers from detaining foreign nationals even though it’s a mandated law, “SECURE COMMUNITIES”. All these so called politicians, the governors, Mayors and other elected political appendages of every level of government should be thrown in the street, when they are adverse to public’s will. For decades the government have repeatedly ignored, that mainstream demands was to build a secure barrier between the U.S and Mexico. There has been no real deterrent of overstays that disappear after leaving airports.
Anybody who has investigated the Democratic leadership would find they slowly weaken 287 G that gave regular police training to question suspicious people about their immigrant status? But oddly currently however the administration has mandated ‘Secure Communities’ which curbs illegal aliens who have been caught, and now subjected to fingerprinting and reviewed by Homeland Security and the ICE branch. Arizona County Sheriff Joe Ariapo was marked by radical groups as was his office; his deputies having a incredulous success until illegal immigration groups didn’t condone him apprehending not just alien criminal, but illegal aliens who have snubbed our laws in his jurisdiction.
We all must realize that BLANKET AMNESTY on the immediate horizon if Obama is returned in November to the white House. Liberals will pull out all the stops to collapse anything that smells of immigration enforcement, including the left’s politicians ignoring illegal aliens voting nationwide.
By now most business are cognizant of the federal program E-Verify? It distinguishes US citizens and legal residents from illegal labor. Although not flawless, it has a 99.6 success rate and observably will overtime become even more constructive to business that believes in the "Rule of Law." Opponents in both the business sector and even on Capitol Hill have released a torrent of abuse against the application and both parties have refused to vote on this mandated law. That includes its function to reveal counterfeit documentation and spurious ID and reject foreign workers, so American can be hired. So even if you are flagged, and eligible to work, irregularities are resolved by GOING TO THE SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE TO BE EXONERATED? ONLY ILLEGAL LABOR WILL AVOID TURNING TO SSA FOR RESOLVING THIS ISSUE.
The open border conspirators may be defeated, when the federal Supreme Court a makes a major decision this month on Arizona policing laws. It could change the outlook of all 50 states, which are observing with great scrutiny if the central government says only there power is absolute. That Arizona cannot protect its own people from unfettered movement of illegal aliens, that they must keep paying for the thieves that are stealing our sovereignty and public entitlements But as E-Verify are perfected it needs to become a permanent tool in the incomplete arsenal of immigration enforcement. It needs to reach out to every company, big and small, in our country and every individual who works there? E-Verify eventually will expel foreign national from the workplace, without financial appropriations on a large scale. These people will self-deport when they cannot be hired anymore.
Businesses will be facing huge fines and prison as the ultimate deterrent. In time it will save our ailing schools, health care, home mortgages and government welfare system. Look to NUMBERSUSA for honest an answer, that includes costs to taxpayers for the new blanket AMNESTY. Which Senators and Republicans, which Governors, Mayors and other elected officials are anti-US American Worker and immigration upgrades? Illegal Immigration, the leaking border region, chain migration, sanctuary cities will certainly be an issue before we arrive at the presidential election. Sanctuary states as California, Nevada, and New York are overwhelmed by the need for more taxes, to pay for the overload of foreign nationals.
California is already suffering from a 16 billion dollar deficit and its liberal Governor, and mostly far left assembly are already determined to siphon of more taxes, from one of the highest taxes rates in the nation. Even more dismal for the future of California is that individuals are trying to pass a state approved Amnesty, for their millions of outlaws. How more insane can this be, when they are already running a huge deficit, by giving illegal aliens welfare, food stamps, health care in the form of MediCAL, Section 8 housing and a education for their children to K-12, although this isn’t true as they are passing laws so these students can appropriate state tax payer dollars for college. Many of educated U.S. born children cannot get into college, as they cannot afford the tuition fees.
Not many Americans have comprehended that if; IF Congress passed an amendment of ‘THE BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP BILL’, there wouldn’t be any more open door of instant citizenship for their children. The 400.000 children who are smuggled through entry ports would no longer qualify for instant citizenship, thereby disabling to some extent unfunded court mandates. It would not be that feasible to bring their unborn child, here unless one parent was a citizen. If enacted the ‘BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP LAW’ would end this hundred billion dollar gift certificate by the left and some Republicans. It would lower classroom size, halt the multiculturalism that is destroying our school performance and return some sanity to our laws of immigration enforcement.
As an example Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) has a miserable enforcement grade of "C-". He was out to erase E-Verify, under fund the border fence from the beginning of the Democratic administration. He is also solely to blame from the earliest vote to halt the incomprehensible theft of illegal aliens stealing $4.6 billion dollars in child tax credits, when most of the children have no residence in the United States. This is bar far the most disgusting state of affairs and Congress has just woken up to the situation.
JUDICIAL WATCH is a public watchdog group Promoting Integrity, Transparency and Accountability in Government, Politics and the Law. They uncover misconduct by government officials and litigation to hold to account politicians and public officials who engage in corrupt activities. Finally ALIPAC informs the public about the coming nightmare of OVERPOPULATION that is already exhibiting itself in our deteriorating infrastructure. TELL YOU’RE POLITICIANS YOU HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE IF THEY PRESS FOR ANY MORE ARMNESTIES, YOU CAN REACH THEM AT THE FEDERAL CLEARING PHONE CENTER AT 202-224-3121.
Join multiple millions of TEA PARTY members and don’t let the Socialist drive us into the dark ages again? We must be very vigilant as these elections in California, and some of the other 50 states as non citizens are voting and will again, including the general election.
SAY NO PRO –ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT LIBERAL SOCIALIST--SANCTUARY CITY—OR BEING HOODWINKED BY GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN OR ANY STATE GOVERNOR MORE TAXES, TO SUPPORT ILLEGAL MIGRANT, IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. GO HOME, LET THERE OWN COUNTRIES PAY FOR THEIR NEEDS AND NOT A FINANCIAL BURDEN FOR U.S. TAXPAYERS
Every American state should take a page from the state of Missouri, who denies they have any illegal aliens in their midst. The "Show Me" state has once again shown us how it should be done? There wants to be more publicity and disclosure concerning what Missouri has done; so, let's pass this around the country. Incidentally, Missouri is not running a deficit as with California, Nevada and other pro-illegal immigration states?
In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the official language of Missouri.
In November, 2008, nearly 90% voted in favor! Thus, English became the official language for ALL governmental activity in Missouri. And so NO individual has the right to demand government services in a language OTHER than English.
In 2008, a measure was approved requiring the Missouri Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officials to validate the immigration status of all person arrested, inform the federal authorities if the person is found to be in Missouri illegally. Missouri law enforcement officers receive specific training with respect to enforcement of federal immigration laws.
In Missouri, illegal immigrants do NOT have admittance to taxpayer’s benefits such as food stamps and health care through the state’s Health net. In 2009, a measure was passed that ensures Missouri’s public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial aid to individuals who are illegally in the United States.
In Missouri, all post-secondary institutions of higher education are required to annually certify to the Missouri Dept. of Higher Education that they have NOT consciously awarded financial aid to students who are unlawfully present in the United States.
So, while Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, Utah, South Carolina, Florida has made national news for policing laws, it is important to remember, Missouri has been far more proactive in addressing this inexplicable issue - but on a step-by-step basis. States as Florida are waiting on the outcome of the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Arizona’s cry for help, from their crippling financial immigration occupation?
The state of Missouri has made it clear that illegal immigrants are NOT welcome in the state and they will certainly NOT receive public benefits at the expense of Missouri taxpayers.
