Habitat: Work by Areca Roe/Sea Change

Two exhibitions opening at Soo Visual Arts Center on Saturday plunge onlookers into watery habitats compromised by structure and/or sentiment. In the evocative "Habitat: Work by Areca Roe," creatures avian and mammalian negotiate a reality bounded by water, concrete, and glass. A Minneapolis photographer, Roe captures these zoo animals largely in moments of quietude, inviting us to contemplate — along with them — the strictures within which we're forced to live. Still, the poignant beauty of her pictures elevates their habitats beyond the realm of prisons into something more ethereal. Meanwhile, in the main gallery, New York painter Samantha French's series "Sea Change" ripples with the relief of bodies relaxing in the swimming pools of summer. Strong, rich brushstrokes generate emotional shadow and light, as her swimmers bask in the deep end of an emotional undertow. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 2.
