More About

TU Dance is the brainchild of Uri Sands and Toni Pierce-Sands, former members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Their first concert at the Cowles Center offers a new work by Uri and two by New York-based choreographers Camille A. Brown and Dwight Rhoden, both of whom are known for their revved-up, accessible dances. Should be interesting, then, to see "B Sessions" by Rhoden, whose work for his own Complexions Contemporary Ballet company has been described as espousing "the aesthetic of gorgeous muscular bodies," performed to music by Beethoven. Brown, whose recent work includes an exploration of minstrel show clichés, presents a newly commissioned piece, while Sands's "January" promises an epic, full-company work that shows off the splendid TU dancers as only his multi-layered dances can.
