More About

On their 21st production, after 13 years of working collaboratively, husband-and-wife team Paul Herwig and Jennifer Ilse have decided to create independently — sort of. In Rip, Romp & Howl the duo, who are artistic directors of Off-Leash Area, have taken on the challenge of creating and directing work without each others' input. The experiment has resulted in five short pieces. "We're happily married and living in the same house, so there's some exchange of ideas and reaction to them," says Herwig, "but for the most part, we're exploring who we are as creators outside of our usual collaborative process." Similar to any long-term deep relationship, the couple has decided to take a step back. It's helped them realize, "Oh yeah, I'm an individual too," he says. The process has showed them both how much they've grown, and what's stayed constant. Herwig says the five pieces are much more contemporary than previous shows they've done, taking on subjects such as mythological Tarot characters, cloned human organs, and '80s artist Jean Michel Basquiat.
