More About

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design is known for breaking through artistic barriers. However, this year it will shatter more than just molds, it will break tradition. For the first time ever, MCAD is holding its "MFA Thesis Exhibition" show at the Northrup King Studios in northeast Minneapolis. The annual exhibit features the final, cumulative works of graduating hopefuls, and is a favorite among local art lovers as it gives them the opportunity to see what the Twin Cities' newest graduates have to offer. Built in 1917, the Northrup is a complex of 10 separate buildings. It's a popular stop during Art-a-Whirl, and is home to around 190 established artists. It's accommodating the work of 18 new artists for this show. Pieces on display range from sculpture to animation, and will take up the entirety of the Third Floor Gallery and more. In the past, the event has been held at the historic Soap Factory. MFA candidate Lea Sorrentino believes the move is an important one. "It's a great opportunity for the MCAD MFA students to be showing in a building filled with other, working Minneapolis artists," she says. The exhibition is currently on display, but there will be a public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 11. (Kayla Plosz,Keeping Your Darlings)
