More About

Iron & Wine fans nostalgic for the days when Sam Beam still favored intimate folk-rock arrangements over big-band bombast will find much to love in the sound of Toronto's Great Lake Swimmers. The past nine years have seen sole band constant Tony Dekker gradually build up the supporting sounds for his twangy and wistful tenor, but he still favors understated melancholy over grand gestures on the band's recently released fifth full-length, New Wild Everywhere. Recorded for the first time in a traditional studio, Dekker's songs have never sounded so sumptuous and refined — as the string-drenched opening ballad "Think That You Might Be Wrong" makes instantly clear. But the expanded sonic palette thankfully never comes at the expense of emotional intimacy. Today, Great Lake Swimmers' Canadian answer to Americana finds a middle ground between approachable adult contemporary pop-rock and darker indie-cred-maintaining balladry. With Cold Specks. All ages.
