Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is far more artistically diverse than its signature piece, "Revelations," might indicate. Yes, the American masterpiece, choreographed by the company's namesake, is an unforgettable foray into the "motivations and emotions of African-American religious music, which, like its heir to the Blues, takes many forms — 'true spirituals' with their sustained melodies, ring shouts, song sermons, gospel songs, and holy blues — songs of trouble, love, and deliverance," as Ailey wrote for the work's premiere 50 years ago. Now under the direction of Robert Battle (who succeeded Judith Jamison), the company is touring two evenings of repertory work that make deciding on just one show impossible. On Tuesday, Rennie Harris's "Home" beckons—his hip-hop-inflected investigations of emotionally powerful truths can rip your heart out. But hard-core dance enthusiasts won't want to miss the company performing Paul Taylor's masterwork "Arden Court," nor "Minus 16" by Ohad Naharin, artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company and founder of the powerful Gaga movement system. Thankfully, "Revelations" is on both programs. (Photo by Andrew Eccles)
