Last January, Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street, a contemporary classic novel about growing up as a young Mexican American girl in Chicago, was one of many books seized from classrooms in Tuscon, Arizona. It was part of the state's mandated ban on the school district's ethnic studies program, which included books and writings by celebrated and award-winning authors such as Leslie Marmon Silko, Howard Zinn, Sherman Alexie, and, yes, even Shakespeare. Luckily, here in Minnesota we still allow books that inspire critical thinking and discourse in our schools. This weekend, you'll have a chance to see an adaptation of Cisneros's beautiful novel onstage at the Southern Theater. Teatro del Pueblo and Pangea will present the play, which has been adapted by Amy Ludwig and directed by Dipankar Mukherjee. Alejandra Tobar-alatriz plays the main character of Esperanza as a girl and Adlyn Carreras plays the role as an adult. The cast also includes Indira Addington, Katia Cardenas, Delta Rae Giordano, Paulino Brener, Vincente Fernandez, and Alberto Panelli. For tickets, call 1.800.838.3006 or visit teatrodelpueblo.org.
