"I wanted to call it 'Milk the Goodwill of the Audience,'" says Jackie Kashian about this week's Crash & Burn show at Acme Comedy Co. "Nobody else was on board with that." Kashian will join fellow comics Bengt Washburn, Dwight Slade, and the show's organizer, Tim Slagle, in a unique, weeklong comedy exercise. Each comedian must go onstage for 20 minutes without using a single joke that has previously been performed. "You're supposed to go up with no material, just premises," she explains. "So, I'm doing a lot of pre-writing but not pre-performing. It's like cheating in a game that doesn't really exist." During the day, the comics will convene and help and each other punch up bits, and then go back onstage at night. The concept is somewhat similar to Set List, a show in Los Angeles organized by Paul Provenza and Troy Conrad. "I love doing that show," says Kashian. "I've come out of that show with some great signature bits." Each comic for Crash & Burn was handpicked by Slagle, shortly after Acme's 20th anniversary celebration a few months back. The first show was on Tuesday, and the plan is for each comedian to have a solid 20 minutes of brand-new material by Saturday. "It will be something you'll want to see each night," says Kashian. And if you're a standup comedy nerd that goes without saying. (Jackie_Kashian photo by Michael Helms)
