The much-anticipated Minnesota debut of Ballet Preljocaj, a 25-member dance company from Aix-en-Provence, is upon us. Break out your Grimm and leave the kiddies at home, because critics who've already weighed in on the full-length ballet, "Snow White (Blanche Neige)," are adamant about one thing: French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj's version of the fairy tale is far more Brothers Grimm than Walt Disney. "In the choreographer's naturalistic and messy world, humans are crude, naive, joyous, sexual, and violent, in equal doses," wrote Laura Bleiberg of the Los Angeles Times. BP's "Blanche Neige," she added, is "part Pieter Bruegel, part Henri Rousseau and, at its most edgy, part Quentin Tarantino. "The kiddies' loss is our gain, whether you're a fan of big edgy music, art, fashion, or dance. The lushly staged ballet is set to Gustav Mahler symphonies. French painter and film production designer Thierry Leproust created the cinematic sets, and the costumes were designed by none other than Jean Paul Gaultier. Frisson; Je peux attendre à peine.
