Shapiro & Smith Dance Company

Lots of dance companies are celebrating anniversaries this year, including the Flying Foot Forum (20 years) and Minnesota Dance Theatre (50 years!). For Shapiro & Smith Dance Company's 25-year anniversary, artistic director Joanie Smith invited former S&S dancers to create "dance phrases or encounters," which Smith then incorporated into a dance with live music by the Orange Mighty Trio. Considering the choreographic chops of the five chosen ones (Erin Thompson, Mathew Janczewski, Uri Sands, Carl Flink, and Broadway veteran Wilson Mendieta, plus company co-founder, the late Danial Shapiro), "Voices" should be quite a rousing — make that riotous — choir. As longtime collaborators from New York, composer Scott Killian and writer David Greenspan have gone all dance-y and created a solo for Smith about her long and richly varied performing career. There will also be reprises of the company's signature work, the 1988 "Family" and the more recent, hilarious kinetic puzzle "Pat A Cake." (Photo by V. Paul Virtucio)
