Fifty years ago Loyce Houlton, a dancer and choreographer from Duluth, founded the Contemporary Dance Playhouse. She went on to become a leader in American regional dance, and her work, which combined ballet with modern dance techniques, was known throughout the United States and Europe. The troupe eventually became Minnesota Dance Theatre, and after closing due to financial difficulties in the 1980s was resurrected in the 1990s with Houlton's daughter Lise as the artistic director. This weekend is your chance to see works by both Loyce and Lise, as well as a new work that demonstrates how MDT isn't shying away from new directions. The group will be performing the regional premiere of Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián’s "La Cathédrale Engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral)," a quartet that utilizes fragments of music by Claude Debussy along with the sounds of breaking waves, tackling the tensions between law and free will. There will also be a re-staging of Loyce's "Ancient Air" as well as a reprise of Lise's "Point of Departure." (Photo by Jim Smith
