More About

In "New Monoprints," a gallery show exhibiting the latest work from Lisa Nankivil, the local artist eschews the colorful palette she has typically embraced in the past. Her previous pieces have included oil paintings of fine, brightly colored lines tightly packed together like rings of a tree trunk. But for this go-around, she has chosen to create art featuring large forms in the white-and-black spectrum only—quite a departure. And yet, these newer works pop with life. The series was developed using toner ink to create random shapes across sheets of polyester fabric. Next, she employed pen, ink, and markers to shape and give structure to each piece. The results are an unusual mix of spontaneous and process-driven elements. Works in the show often read like a Rorschach test of sorts, as things like anatomy forms, flowing water, and thought bubbles can be seen splashed about if one takes a sharp look. There will be an artist's reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 23. (Lisa Nankivil, Virgin and Satyr)
