This touring show, which has previously been exhibited in Rome and Milan, features the culmination of a yearlong project by photographers Sham Hinchey and Marzia Messina. Each day they photographed a different person using the same lighting and backdrop. The common thread was that all participants were female and Italian, though their age, class, and life stories vary dramatically. The goal of the project was to snap images capturing the essence of each individual participant with more honesty and authenticity than what is currently presented in the media as the feminine ideal. "The right shot usually appeared in the moment that the woman let down her barriers in a conscious or subconscious decision to entrust the photographer, and to have trust in themselves," says Hinchey. The project began specifically as a critical response to the objectification and exploitation of women in Italian media, politics, and advertising, but it really could apply to media trends worldwide. The photos will be on display in chronological order, and will include a personal history, translated from Italian into English, with each photo. The opening reception is from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 16.
