More About

Conor McPherson's plays often dance between the normal and paranormal, with ghosts and even the devil inhabiting works like Shining City, The Weir, and The Seafarer. McPherson turns to a different corner of the paranormal with The Birds, which will receive its American premiere in the Dowling Studio at the Guthrie Theater. The play shares the name and the original short story by Daphne du Maurier that Alfred Hitchcock used for his classic 1963 film. McPherson strips the action down to its essence: a home without electricity and little food, a small group of survivors searching for answers that are not likely to come. Director Henry Wishcamper hopes to bring the story's claustrophobic tone to life, as McPherson's work cuts close to the original story, showing the effects of the bird attacks through the eyes of an isolated group of people. A talented quartet of area actors take on the story, led by J.C. Cutler and Angela Timberman (who played Scrooge and his housekeeper Merriweather in A Christmas Carol), along with Summer Hagen and Stephen Yoakam. (Photo by Heidi Bohnenkamp)
