Mathew Janczewski's ARENA Dances

This weekend, Mathew Janczewski's ARENA Dances will premiere three new works in addition to showing the acclaimed piece "Quartet," which has been expanded. The performance features the return of former company member Susie Brackin. She will be dancing "Frozen River," a duet Janczewski choreographed, with Heather Klopchin, who took over Brackin's role when she moved to L.A. Janczewski says that the two dancers look like "liquid silver moving together" in the piece. Another premiere is a Janczewski solo dance choreographed by Robin Stiehm called "Forward Reminiscence." In it he performs on a 10-foot square of sod. The work is about finding a peaceful place. "It's very melancholy, but also joyful," he says. The third new piece, called "Anthem," is set to the music of Michael Nyman and is a new company work that's "just out-and-out dancing," and about "the glorious things you can imagine yourself to do," Janczewski says. Dancers will be "moving big and glorious and pushing and cheering." (Photo by Aaron Warkov)
