Although Literary Death Match began in New York City, and is currently on a U.S. and European tour, the raucous lit event always has a Twin Cities flavor when it crashes into town. That's because each tour stop is curated individually to include local authors, local judges, and local businesses. The tone of these evenings is typically a wild mix of American Idol, a slam poetry competition, and a good happy hour. Four local writers will be given seven minutes to perform their most stirring, entertaining, and original stuff, followed by random thoughts, comments, and tips from the panel of judges. Quickly, the four will be knocked down to three, and then two, who will fight to the death (or until a winner is crowned) using words alone. Tonight's judges include filmmaker Emily Goldberg, Ian Rans of Drinking with Ian, and sex columnist Alexis McKinnis. Battling it out will be jack-of-all-trades writer Tristan Jimerson, Sarah Stonich (The Ice Chorus), Hmong-American memoirist Kao Kalia Yang, and Martin Kihn, whose book House of Lies is now a hit Showtime series starring Don Cheadle. Come early for the happy hour ($3 on select drinks from 3 to 7 p.m.), but be sure to stay for the rowdy readings. Read more about Literary Death Match here. (Pictured: Even founder Todd Zuniga)
