Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre: Zorro in the Land of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker

Susana di Palma, artistic director of Zorongo Dance Theatre, delves into her personal story for the upcoming production of "Zorro in the Land of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker (Moningwunakauning)." In the piece she tells the tragic and moving story of her Anishinaabe great-grandmother, whose children were taken from her by her white husband and brought to a boarding school near Madeline Island (originally called Moningwunakauning, or Home of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker). In Zorongo's fantastical telling of this tale, the grandmother is aided by a Spanish trickster character named Zorro (or Fox) in a mashup of Native American and flamenco traditions. The production is the result of collaboration with local Anishinaabe artists such as poet Heid Erdrich, animator Jonathan Thunder, and singer Marissa Carr, and includes the talents of composer/flamenco guitarist Pedro Cortes Jr. and singer Vicente Griego. Ballet of the Dolls' Myron Johnson plays Father Odric, Antonio Granjero is Zorro, and Di Palma herself plays the role of grandmother. (Photo by Brandon Werth)
