Ever since Marcel Duchamp turned a urinal upside down, signed it R. Mutt, named it Fountain, and submitted it to the Society of Independent Artists exhibit in 1917, interest in the everyday as art has continued unabated. In 2010, the Weisman Art Museum presented "Common Sense: Art and the Quotidian," which examined how artists from Andy Warhol to Lewis Hine were inspired by the "common." On Saturday, the Walker Art Center opens "Lifelike," which presents artworks based on everyday objects that are startlingly realistic or surrealistic in their execution. Think marble garbage bags and balsa-wood erasers. The international exhibition includes more than 90 works from the 1960s to today by more than 50 artists. Paintings, photography, installations, video, sculpture, and Ai Weiwei's jar of porcelain sunflower seeds are among the objects in the exhibition. Whether simple or spectacular, the works probe Freud's notion of the uncanny in ways Duchamp couldn't have imagined. Yet look what the urinal hath wrought.
