In an interview with performing-arts curator Philip Bither on the Walker Art Center's website, choreographer Bill T. Jones describes iconic artistic collaborators John Cage and Merce Cunningham as "bad-ass artists" in possession of "ideas I cherish." He might as well have been describing himself. For 30 years, Jones has been edifying and enlightening audiences with his hair-raising, luminous explorations of race, identity, and human relationships through dance-theater. In "Story/Time," Jones returns to the stage not to dance (he's retired), but to tell a series of one-minute stories as his magnificent company illuminates the mini-narratives with kinetic expression. The structure is Cage's 1959 composition "Indeterminacy." The operating principle is a layering of music, movement, and words. Expect emotional resonance and intellectual provocation of the highest order.
